Inhaled salbutamol: a new form of drug abuse?

چکیده
In day 1 cow colostrum neutralising antibody titres to human rotavirus ranged from 400 to 6400 while the IgA and IgG content was 23-170 mg/dl and 1500-4200 mg/dl, respectively. Both titres and Ig concentrations were lower in colostrum from days 2 and 3. Market milk contained little IgA or IgG and few neutralising antibodies. Because the human jejunum contains 200 Ilg/ml trypsin we treated colostrum samples with trypsin (100-800 fg/ml) for 1 h at 37 °C: rotavirus neutralising titres were not affected. In the therapeutic trial rota colostrum had no effect on duration of diarrhoea, bowel movements, or virus shedding in stool. However, there were no side-effects of rota colostrum-in particular, no milk allergy. 6 orphans were given 20 ml rota colostrum (titre 400-1280) every morning. Of the 9 controls, given 20 ml of market milk, 2, who had had diarrhoea in 1981, were already seropositive for rotavirus and were excluded from the statistical analysis. In Tsuruoka city, sporadic cases of acute gastroenteritis were reported in midDecember, 1982, so rota colostrum (or milk) prophylaxis was started in the orphanage on Dec 14. On Jan 26 there was an outbreak of rotavirus diarrhoea at the orphanage, affecting 6 of the 7 controls

COMPARISON OF THE ACUTE BRONCHO DILATING EFFECTS OF INHALED IPRATROPIUM BROMIDE AND SALBUTAMOL IN PATIENTS WI TH CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISE ASE
Forty-five patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were studied to compare the acute effects of ipratropium bromide (60 µg), salbutamol (300 µg) and placebo (3 puffs) on the forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV 1) and forced vital capacity (PVC). Ipratropium bromide produced a significantly greater improvement than salbutamol in both FEV1 and FVC at 15,60 and 180 minutes afte...

A randomized, double-blind, crossover trial was designed to compare the acute effects of Combivent and salbutamol on spirometric parameters in patients with moderate to severe asthma. Nineteen patients with a mean baseline forced expiratory volume in 1 sec. (FEV]) less than 65% predicted, were randomized on two separate days to receive two puffs of salbutamol (200 µg) or two puffs of Combiv...
متن کاملMedical and pharmacological approach to adjust the salbutamol anti-doping policy in athletes.
BACKGROUND Salbutamol abuse detection by athletes is based on a urinary upper threshold defined by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). However, this threshold was determined in healthy, untrained individuals and after a dose of salbutamol inhaled that might not really mirror the condition of asthmatic athletes and the experts's guidelines for asthma management. We aimed to revise this threshol...
متن کاملPreventive effects of ipratropium and salbutamol against insulin induced tracheal smooth muscle contraction in guinea pig model
Inhalational insulin was withdrawn from the market due to its potential to produce airway hyper-reactivity and bronchoconstriction. So the present study was designed to explore the acute effects of insulin on airway reactivity of guinea pigs and protective effects of salbutamol and ipratropium against insulin induced airway hyper-responsiveness on isolated tracheal smooth muscle of guinea pig. ...
متن کاملMuscle spasms and creatine phosphokinase elevation following salbutamol administration.
The drug of choice for the treatment of occasional acute symptoms of asthma is an inhaled beta adrenergic agonist, such as salbutamol. The most frequent adverse reactions to salbutamol include nervousness, headache, tremor, tiredness and light-headedness [1]. The following report describes a patient with asthma from childhood, who developed creatine phosphokinase elevation associated with sever...
